Course Description

Learning to build a Cob Oven is the perfect introduction to the world of Natural Building. From sourcing and testing soil compositions, to learning about the breathability clay offers as a binder in earthen construction, this project explores many of the fundamental concepts necessary to understand when choosing to build with earth. In this four-day workshop, we will learn to stack a solid stone or masonry foundation, insulate the oven platform, create a level fire-brick oven floor, pack sand into the oven cavity, build the insulated oven dome, sculpt artistic cob features, and coat everything with a resilient earthen plaster. If climate and time permit, we will celebrate with a pizza party to test our beautiful oven. In addition to the hands-on knowledge gained from the actual build, the workshop will feature lectures that delve into the conceptual side of cob and earthen building materials.

About Our Host

Alderwood Farm is located 25 minutes East of Portland along the Columbia River in an adorable little town called Corbett. The owner, Alex Slakie, is hard at work building an agricultural oasis to service the local intentional community living adjacent to his idyllic pastures and forest. Given his proximity to this community, workshop students will have access to their facilities including compost toilets, showers, and camping areas. Three daily, healthy, vegetarian meals will be prepared in their kitchen, and we will use their wood shop for our lectures. Clay Sand Soul is excited for our new collaboration with these conscious creators as we believe deeply in what they are building in the forests of the Columbia Gorge.
